Lighthouses in the Tropics

The Tropics as a Navigation Challenge

The tropical coastline presents a navigational environment quite unlike the rocky headlands and tidal estuaries of northern Europe that shaped the main tradition of lighthouse construction. In the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and across the Pacific, the principal dangers are not cliffs and peninsulas but shallow coral reefs, which may rise to within half a metre of the surface across an area of many square kilometres, presenting no visual warning at sea level. The light that warns a vessel off a northern European rock can, in principle, be sited on the rock itself or on the headland above it. A tropical reef lighthouse has to be built on the reef — an engineering challenge of a different order, in water that can be warm enough to accelerate corrosion, in a region that experiences cyclones capable of generating wave heights that no permanent structure can fully resist.

Cast Iron and the Tropics

The preferred material for tropical lighthouse construction in the British colonial period was cast iron, bolted together from pre-fabricated components and shipped from foundries in England. Cast iron does not rot; it is relatively impervious to the marine borers that destroyed wooden foundations in tropical waters within a few years; it can be economically manufactured in standardised sections and assembled on site with relatively unskilled labour. Trinity House and the colonial lighthouse services developed a repertoire of cast-iron lighthouse designs between the 1840s and the 1890s that could be adapted to reef, island, or coastal headland locations.

The Ile aux Fous lighthouse on Réunion, the Phare de la Désirade on Guadeloupe, and several stations in the Straits of Malacca were built to cast-iron pattern-book designs. The Lengkuas lighthouse on Belitung Island in Indonesia, first lit in 1882 and still active, is a particularly well-preserved example: a cylindrical cast-iron tower 55 metres tall, sitting on a small coral island, showing a flashing white light. It has survived well over a century of the Indonesian monsoon cycle and remains a functioning navigational aid.

The Florida Reef Chain

The Florida Keys form one of the longest barrier reef systems in the world, and marking it required an entire programme of offshore reef lighthouses in the mid-nineteenth century. The US Lighthouse Board, confronting a reef system 225 kilometres long with no dry land on which to build, developed the screw-pile design — a framework of iron piles screwed into the reef flat and supporting an elevated lighthouse structure above wave reach — and then, for the most exposed outer reef sites, progressed to granite masonry towers.

Fowey Rocks lighthouse, completed in 1878 by engineer William Jilson, stands on the outer reef south of Miami on a screwpile foundation and shows a flashing white light from 33 metres above the water. Carysfort Reef lighthouse, first lit in 1852, was the first of the Florida reef towers and is a screw-pile iron structure 43 metres tall, still standing though deactivated. The Sombrero Key light, completed in 1858, is an iron pile structure on a challenging open-water reef, 48 metres tall, active with a flashing white light visible at 15 nautical miles. These are engineering achievements that required construction workers to camp on exposed reefs through hurricane season while assembling iron frameworks in surf conditions.

Caribbean Cyclone Engineering

The hurricane season imposes an extraordinary structural requirement on Caribbean lighthouses. Storm surge can raise sea level by several metres; wind loading on a 30-metre tower in a Category 5 hurricane can be many times the loading experienced by any European light in a winter storm. The colonial lighthouse engineers of the nineteenth century did not have precise data on these forces, but they observed the results — towers damaged or destroyed by major storms — and adjusted their designs accordingly.

The Hope Town lighthouse on Elbow Reef in the Bahamas, completed in 1863, is a candy-striped masonry tower 36 metres tall that has survived multiple major hurricanes while continuing to use its original 1863 Fresnel lens, which is still wound by hand and is one of the last hand-wound kerosene-powered lighthouse lenses in the world. The lens rotates on a flotation mechanism — a cast-iron lens cradle floating in a bath of mercury — that allows the heavy optic to be turned by a small weight-and-clockwork mechanism. The Bahamas Electricity Corporation automated the light in 1988, but the hand-winding mechanism and the Fresnel lens remain in place.

Coral Reef Lighthouses of the Indo-Pacific

The South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca together constitute the most heavily trafficked shipping lane in the world, and the reef systems that interrupt them have required lighthouses since the nineteenth century. The Horsburgh lighthouse at the eastern end of the Strait of Malacca, completed in 1851 and built from granite quarried in Granite Island, near Johor Bahru, stands 29 metres tall on a coral reef and marks the final approach to Singapore. It is administered by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and remains active, showing a flashing white light with a range of 20 nautical miles.

Pulau Pisang lighthouse, built in 1914 on a small island off the Malay coast, has been operated under a unique arrangement by Singapore since Malaysian independence, with Singapore maintaining the station and the right to fly its flag there as part of an agreement dating to the pre-federation period. It remains one of the few lighthouse stations in the world still technically staffed, with Singapore staff members rotating through the island.

The Great Barrier Reef

Australia's Great Barrier Reef, extending roughly 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast, was lighted progressively from the 1840s onward as colonial maritime traffic increased. Dent Island lighthouse (1879), Lady Elliot Island (1866, rebuilt 1873), and several screwpile structures on the outer reef contributed to a marking system that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority continues to maintain. Lady Elliot Island lighthouse, on the southernmost coral cay of the reef, is particularly significant: the original light was established to guide vessels clear of a reef whose presence caused multiple colonial-era shipwrecks, and the island is now an eco-resort whose economy depends substantially on its lighthouse heritage and the reef ecology that surrounds it.
