Understanding Light Characteristics
Every lighthouse is a code. Where a simple fire or candle can tell a mariner only that land is near, a light with a precisely defined character can tell him exactly which piece of land — which specific lighthouse, which hazard, which harbour entrance. The system of light characteristics that now governs lighthouses worldwide represents one of the great rationalisations of maritime safety, replacing a chaotic variety of local practices with a universal language readable by any navigator with a chart and a watch. Understanding this language transforms a lighthouse from a scenic landmark into an instrument of communication.
What a Light Characteristic Is
A light characteristic is the defined pattern of light and darkness — or of coloured light — that a lighthouse displays over a fixed period, called the period. The period is measured in seconds from the start of one cycle to the start of the next identical cycle. When the period is recorded on a chart or in a List of Lights, it is expressed alongside an abbreviation for the character type and the colour if not white. A mariner approaching an unknown coast looks at the light, times its period with a watch, and checks the result against the chart: if the chart shows Fl(3) W 15s and the light flashes three times in a 15-second cycle, the identification is confirmed.
The distinction between different character types is not arbitrary. Each type was developed or refined to serve a specific navigational purpose, and the choice of character for a given lighthouse reflects the hazards it marks and the traffic likely to be passing it.
Fixed Lights
The simplest possible lighthouse shows a fixed, continuous white light: F W in the standard notation. Fixed lights were common in the earliest era of lighthouse keeping, when the lamp was simply left burning and there was no mechanism to interrupt it. They are now rarely used for major coastal lights because they are difficult to distinguish from the lights of a ship at anchor or from onshore illumination. They persist mainly as minor harbour lights and approach markers, where the risk of confusion is lower and the range of the light is short. A fixed light has no period — it is always on — and this absence of timing is itself a navigational datum, telling the mariner that he is looking at a harbour entrance or a local mark rather than a major offshore light.
Flashing Lights
A flashing light shows a single flash at regular intervals, with the dark period always longer than the light period. This asymmetry — more darkness than light in each cycle — is built into the definition and distinguishes flashing from isophase lights. The notation is Fl followed by the colour if not white, then the period: Fl W 5s means a single white flash every five seconds. Group flashing lights show a defined number of flashes followed by a long eclipse; Fl(3) W 15s means three flashes, then darkness, the whole cycle taking 15 seconds. The number of flashes in a group — from two to five or more — multiplies the number of distinct identities available within the same character type.
Flashing lights are among the most common character types on major coastal lighthouses because the brief flash is visible at long range (a bright, concentrated moment of light carries further than a sustained dim glow) and the timing of the period is easily measured with a wristwatch. Cape Hatteras in North Carolina flashes once every 7.5 seconds; Bishop Rock at the Scilly Isles shows a group of two flashes every 15 seconds. Both are instantly identifiable to anyone with a chart.
Occulting Lights
An occulting light is the inverse of a flashing light: it is on for more of the cycle than it is off, with the period of darkness (the occultation) shorter than the period of light. The abbreviation is Oc, followed by colour and period. A single occulting light, Oc W 10s, shows a long period of white light interrupted by a single brief eclipse every ten seconds. Group occulting, Oc(2) W 20s, interrupts with two brief eclipses before returning to the continuous on-phase.
Occulting lights are particularly useful for harbour entrances and inshore passages, where the mariner is navigating at shorter range and needs a light that is clearly visible most of the time, with the darkness serving mainly as a timing signal. The dominant impression of an occulting light is of a light that goes off briefly rather than a darkness that is briefly interrupted by a flash — a psychological as well as technical distinction that makes occulting lights particularly readable in the complex visual environment of a harbour approach with many competing sources of illumination.
Isophase Lights
An isophase light, abbreviated Iso, has equal periods of light and darkness: the light is on for exactly as long as it is off in each cycle. Iso W 4s means two seconds of white light followed by two seconds of darkness, repeating indefinitely. The equal durations give isophase lights a distinctive, metronomic quality that makes them easy to count by eye without a stopwatch. They are widely used on harbour entrance piers, breakwater heads, and the range lights that guide vessels through narrow channels by the alignment of two lights on different poles.
Very Quick and Ultra Quick Flashing
At the opposite end of the frequency scale, lights that flash more than 50 times per minute are classified as quick flashing (Q), and those faster than 120 flashes per minute as very quick flashing (VQ) or ultra quick flashing (UQ). These rapid-flash lights are used almost exclusively for buoys and small navigational marks rather than lighthouses; the rapid flicker serves as an attention-getting signal for specific hazards — a wreck buoy, the end of a submerged training wall, a shallow-water obstruction. The rapid flash is difficult to time precisely, which is intentional: the mariner is not expected to identify the light by period but simply to recognise that something specific and urgent is being signalled.
Colour Sectors
A single lighthouse can communicate considerably more information than simple identification by superimposing different colours onto different arcs of its rotation. A sectored light shows white through the safe approach sector, red through one or more danger sectors (shoals, rocks, or other hazards on specific bearings), and sometimes green through a secondary safe sector or a recommended track. When a navigator approaching a harbour sees the light change from white to red, he knows he has deviated from the safe approach angle — without any position fixing, purely from the change in the light's colour. When the light returns to white, he is back on track.
The notation for a sectored light includes all colours in use: Fl(2) WRG 5s means the light shows a double-flash pattern, in white, red, and green sectors over different arcs, on a 5-second period. The precise bearings of the sector limits are given in the chart and the List of Lights, and the navigator can calculate exactly at what bearing he crosses from one sector to another.
Morse Code Lights
A small number of lighthouses show a Morse code character, abbreviated Mo followed by the letter in brackets: Mo(A) W 6s identifies a light that flashes the Morse letter A (dot-dash) in white on a 6-second period. Morse code lights are now relatively rare as main lighthouse lights, having been largely superseded by the more flexible group-flash and group-occult systems, but they persist on some buoys and special purpose marks, particularly the cardinal buoy system used to indicate hazards relative to a compass bearing.
Reading the List of Lights
Every lighthouse authority publishes an annual or periodically updated List of Lights — a comprehensive directory of every navigation light under their jurisdiction, giving name, position, light character, height above sea level, nominal range in nautical miles, structure description, and any fog signal. These publications, now available digitally as well as in the traditional paper volumes, are the navigator's definitive reference.
