Lighthouses and Bird Migration

The Fatal Attraction

On the night of 4 November 1904, the keeper at Makapuu lighthouse on Oahu recorded that the tower's light had attracted an extraordinary fall of birds: hundreds of golden plovers, barn owls, and at least one species he could not identify circled the lantern through the hours of darkness, with many striking the glass. The same phenomenon — migrants drawn to a lighthouse beacon and either grounding on the station or flying into the lantern panes — had been observed by keepers at coastal lighthouses since the first great fixed lights were established in the 1820s. Ornithologists learned early that lighthouse stations provided both a reliable observation platform for studying migration and, grimly, a source of specimens. Many of the nineteenth century's most significant records of rare or vagrant birds in Britain and Ireland came from the register of birds killed at lighthouses, collected and published by the British Ornithologists' Union from 1880 onward.

Why Lights Attract Birds

Migrating birds navigate by a combination of star patterns, the Earth's magnetic field, polarised light from the sky, and landmarks including river systems and coastlines. On overcast nights when celestial cues are unavailable, the magnetic sense becomes dominant, but it can be disrupted by strong artificial light sources. The mechanism is not fully understood, but research conducted at radio towers, offshore platforms, and lighthouses suggests that a powerful beam of light creates a zone of visual confusion in which birds lose their heading reference and begin to circle. Once circling, they may orbit for several hours, progressively exhausting themselves, until they land on any nearby surface — or strike it.

The effect is strongest with fixed or slowly rotating lights. The old fixed-light stations using large paraffin burners were particularly hazardous; the revolving characteristic of modern optics, combined with the far lower intensity of LED lanterns compared with nineteenth-century oil-fed first-order Fresnel lenses, has substantially reduced lighthouse kill rates. Some lighthouse authorities experimented with turning off lights during known peak migration nights in the mid-twentieth century but found the navigational risk to shipping difficult to justify.

Fair Isle Bird Observatory

Fair Isle lies halfway between Orkney and Shetland, and is the most isolated inhabited island in Britain. The Northern Lighthouse Board light at South Harbour was established in 1892, and keepers at the station began recording birds visiting the island in the early twentieth century. The lighthouse keeper William Ewen, who served on Fair Isle from the 1920s to the 1940s, maintained careful notes on every unusual species he observed — a body of data that formed the foundation for the Fair Isle Bird Observatory, formally established in 1948 by George Waterston. The observatory and the lighthouse are now essentially separate institutions sharing the same 766-hectare island, but the observatory's famous ringing logs — recording the first British records of a long series of Siberian and American vagrants — would not exist without the lighthouse as the reason for a trained observer to be stationed in such a remote location.

Heligoland and the Vogelwarte

The island of Heligoland in the German Bight carries a lighthouse first established in the eighteenth century and substantially rebuilt by the German imperial lighthouse authority in the 1900s. The island became the site of one of Europe's first bird observatories — the Vogelwarte Heligoland, established under the ornithologist Heinrich Gätke in the 1870s — because the lighthouse keeper tradition of recording migrants had produced a database of observations that Gätke recognised as scientifically extraordinary. His 1890 book Die Vogelwarte Helgoland, published in English as Heligoland as an Ornithological Observatory in 1895, remains a foundational text in the study of bird migration. Gätke documented the occurrence and approximate timing of every migratory species passing the island over fifty years, using the lighthouse's light as a collecting and observing tool.

North American Lighthouse Observatories

Several lighthouse sites on the North American Atlantic flyway have been developed as formal bird observatories. The Cape May Point lighthouse in New Jersey, built in 1859 to a design by Army engineer Alexander Bache and standing 52 metres high, sits at the tip of a peninsula that concentrates migrating raptors, warblers, and shorebirds in extraordinary numbers each autumn. The Cape May Bird Observatory, established in the 1970s, conducts daily hawk counts from the lighthouse grounds from late August through November. Average single-day counts of broad-winged hawks in mid-September regularly exceed 50,000 individuals funnelled by the cape's geography into a narrow flight line over the lighthouse.

Whitefish Point in Michigan, site of a lighthouse first established in 1848 and featuring the oldest operating lighthouse tower on Lake Superior, is similarly celebrated for owl migration in spring. The Whitefish Point Bird Observatory records large movements of long-eared owls, short-eared owls, and northern hawk owls across Lake Superior in April, a flight that is detectible from the lighthouse grounds because the point is the first landfall for birds crossing the lake from Canada.

The Bardsey Island Tradition

Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) off the Lleyn Peninsula in Wales carries a Trinity House lighthouse built in 1821 — a 29-metre tower showing a red and white flashing light. The island's position at the tip of the peninsula makes it a concentration point for migrants in both spring and autumn, and the Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory, operating since 1953, has maintained continuous ringing and observing records from a site that was inhabited by lighthouse keepers until automation in 1987. The observatory now occupies the former keepers' cottages. The bird list for Bardsey runs to more than 360 species, including many of the rarest vagrants ever recorded in Wales.

Seabird Casualties and Mitigation

Dead seabirds collected at lighthouse stations provided specimen material for museum collections throughout the nineteenth century, and the practice was initially encouraged by lighthouse authorities. Trinity House distributed collection instructions to keepers in the 1870s, asking them to preserve unusual birds in spirits and forward them to the Natural History Museum in London. The data these collections generated about seabird distribution, migration routes, and species occurrence have not been superseded and are still cited in current research. Modern lighthouse authorities take a different view: the RSPB and BirdLife International have worked with Trinity House and the Northern Lighthouse Board to minimise light pollution at known migration bottlenecks, and the shift to low-intensity LED optics has materially reduced collision mortality at several major stations.
