The Life of a Lighthouse Keeper

The Shape of the Day

The lighthouse keeper's day was organised by the lamp, not by the sun. The primary duty was to ensure the light was burning from sunset to sunrise, and everything else — sleep, meals, maintenance, correspondence — fitted around that obligation. A keeper working alone could not sleep through the entire night; at intervals of a few hours, depending on the fuel type, the lamp had to be attended. Wick-trimmed oil lamps consumed fuel unevenly and could produce soot that dimmed the glass if not regularly cleaned. The Argand and later petroleum vapour burners were more stable, but the clockwork mechanism driving the rotation of the lens required winding every few hours. No keeper whose light went dark through negligence would keep his post.

The formal schedule varied by authority and by period. Trinity House in England issued Regulations for Keepers that ran to dozens of detailed provisions: when the light must be lit (at sunset or when visibility fell below a specified level), how the log must be kept, what maintenance records must be filed, how the station buildings must be cleaned. The Northern Lighthouse Board issued similar instructions for Scottish stations. At rock stations with two keepers on duty, the watch was divided between them, typically on a four-hours-on, four-hours-off rotation through the night.

Shore Stations and Family Life

At mainland or island shore stations, the keeper and his family lived in the attached dwelling. The arrangement was domestic in a conventional sense — children went to local schools, wives managed households, the keeper had a garden — but the location was almost always isolated. A shore lighthouse might be miles from the nearest town, on a headland accessible only by a single track road, with no neighbours and no facilities except whatever the station provided. The community was the lighthouse. The available company, outside the family, was limited to the assistant keeper or keepers and their families.

The station buildings were designed by the lighthouse authority and built to a standard specification, which meant that keepers transferred between stations moved from one identical dwelling to another. The cottages at Scottish Northern Lighthouse Board stations are still recognisable by their whitewashed walls, slate roofs and the authority's characteristic style: a double cottage for the principal keeper and his assistant, often with a garden wall, a flagpole, and a store. The lighthouse tower itself was typically adjacent, connected to the cottage by a covered passageway in the more elaborate Victorian stations.

Children who grew up in lighthouse families often described childhoods of unusual freedom — the run of a headland, a private beach, a particular relationship with weather — combined with a restricted social world. Moving was frequent, since keepers were transferred between stations regularly, and friendships formed at school were regularly severed. The lighthouse service was to a significant degree hereditary: sons followed fathers, and lighthouse surnames appeared repeatedly in the service records of Trinity House and the Northern Lighthouse Board over multiple generations.

Rock Stations: The Harder Assignment

The distinction between a shore station and a rock station was the distinction between difficulty and genuine hardship. A rock station — the Eddystone, Wolf Rock, Bishop Rock, Bell Rock, Skerryvore — had no land attached. There were no families, no gardens, no shops. The station was the tower and nothing else. Two or three keepers were on duty at any time, with relief arriving at scheduled intervals of four to eight weeks, depending on the authority and the station.

Relief was by tender vessel or, from the mid-twentieth century, by helicopter. In bad weather, relief could be delayed for days or weeks. Records from Wolf Rock, 14 kilometres off Land's End, show that in severe winters keepers were sometimes confined for six or eight weeks beyond their scheduled relief date, waiting for weather calm enough for a boat to approach. The total party on the rock during such periods was typically three men, in a tower perhaps 14 metres in diameter at the base, with accommodation for sleeping, eating, and storing provisions, plus the lamp room and the machinery space.

The psychological effects of rock duty were acknowledged by the lighthouse authorities, if not always openly. The men selected for rock stations tended to be practical, self-contained, and tolerant of confined company. Disputes on rock stations were not uncommon, and the records of dismissals from service include cases where keepers at isolated stations came to blows, refused to communicate with one another, or developed mental health crises that were only apparent when the relief tender arrived. The Flannan Isles mystery of December 1900, in which all three keepers vanished without explanation, became the most famous case, but it was the exception; the ordinary toll of rock duty was slower and less dramatic.

Women Keepers

The lighthouse keeper in the public imagination is almost invariably male, but women served as keepers — typically inheriting the role when a husband or father died in post — from the earliest period of institutional lighthouse management. In the United States, the Light-House Establishment's records identify more than 200 women who served as keepers at various times, the most celebrated being Ida Lewis at Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island, who tended the light from 1879 until her death in 1911 and was credited with numerous rescues. In Sweden, Malin Swartz served as keeper at Gässten in the early nineteenth century and was noted in official records for the quality of her station management.

Grace Darling is the most famous figure associated with lighthouse keeping in Britain, though her fame rests on a rescue rather than the routine of the work. She was the daughter of the keeper at Longstone Lighthouse in the Farne Islands, and in September 1838, aged 22, she and her father rowed out in a heavy sea to rescue survivors from the wrecked steamer Forfarshire. The heroism was real, but so was the context: she had grown up in a lighthouse, knew the water, and had the skills the situation required. She died of tuberculosis in 1842, aged 26.

Duties Beyond the Light

The keeper's responsibilities extended well beyond lamp maintenance. All stations kept detailed logs recording the character of the light, any defects observed, the weather, visibility, and passing shipping. Weather observations were made at regular intervals and, at many stations, transmitted to the meteorological service: the lighthouse network's long-run coastal weather data is now a significant resource for climate historians. At stations with fog signals — bells, guns, steam sirens, diaphones or reed horns — the keeper was responsible for monitoring visibility and operating the signal when required. Fog signal duty was exhausting: the signal might need to operate continuously for 24 or 48 hours during a major fog event, requiring constant monitoring of the machinery and fuel.

Shore stations generally had a garden or smallholding, and keepers were expected to maintain it. The produce supplemented the household's food supply, which at remote stations was otherwise limited to what the supply tender brought. At some rock stations in the nineteenth century, keepers fished from the galleries in suitable weather, both for food and to relieve the monotony. The station buildings required continuous maintenance: painting, pointing, rope work, the thousand small jobs that accumulate on a structure in a saltwater environment.

The End of the Era

The automation of lighthouses between the 1950s and the late 1990s made the lighthouse keeper's role redundant in the most literal sense. The last keepers at Trinity House's shore stations left their duties in 1998; the last rock keepers had gone a decade earlier. Most accepted redundancy or transfer to shore-based technical roles within the lighthouse authorities. A few remained as caretakers of stations that were being converted or transferred to heritage organisations.

What they carried with them was knowledge specific to the places they had kept — the particular behaviour of the light on foggy nights, the local currents that affected relief boat handling, the weather patterns that gave twelve hours' warning of a south-westerly gale. That local knowledge is not recorded in any archive. It was learned by years of living on a headland and it retired with the men and women who held it.
