Climbing a Lighthouse: What to Expect

Before You Step Inside

Climbing a lighthouse is one of those experiences that sounds straightforward until you are three flights up and the staircase is narrowing. The reality is more demanding, more disorienting, and ultimately more rewarding than most visitors anticipate. Each tower has its own character — the angle of the stairs, the sound of the wind at the gallery railing, the quality of light that filters through the lens glass — and no two ascents feel quite the same. Understanding what to expect makes the climb more enjoyable and helps you appreciate the engineering that shapes every step.

The Structure and the Stair Count

Most lighthouse towers open to visitors are circular masonry structures between 20 and 60 metres tall. Cape Hatteras in North Carolina, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States at just under 59 metres, has 257 steps. The Cape May Lighthouse in New Jersey, built in 1859 and still active, has 199. At the other end of the scale, the West Quoddy Head lighthouse in Maine, a modest 18-metre tower, requires fewer than 70 steps. Tall open-sea towers like the Fastnet in County Cork and the Bishop Rock off the Scilly Isles are not open to climb, but many coastal and landfall towers are accessible through conservation organisations or national park services that manage them.

The stairs in a nineteenth-century tower are almost always cast iron, set within a central column or running along the inner wall in a tight spiral. The treads are narrow at the inner edge — sometimes barely the width of a boot — and widen toward the outer wall. The curvature of the staircase means that every step slightly turns you, and the cumulative effect over two hundred steps can produce a mild form of disorientation. Visitors who suffer from claustrophobia or vertigo sometimes find the lower portion of the climb more challenging than the open gallery at the top; the tower narrows as it rises, the central void tightens, and the walls draw closer.

Landings and the Watch Room

Most towers break the climb with at least one intermediate landing, typically a small circular room at the oil room level where fuel was once stored, or the watch room directly below the lantern. These landings give the legs a moment to recover and the eyes something horizontal to focus on. In working lighthouse days, the watch room was where the keeper spent the night shift, monitoring the light, winding the clockwork mechanism that rotated the lens, and logging weather observations. Many watch rooms retain their original fittings: curved wooden benches, a small desk, a clock bracket on the wall. Some have been fitted with interpretive displays by the heritage organisations that now manage the tower.

The watch room window is often the first place where the view opens up properly. Depending on the design, you may look through thick glazed panes across the coastline or out to sea, the perspective shifting rapidly because the room is only a few metres below the full gallery height. This is also where the sound of the building becomes most apparent: the structure creaks and flexes in wind, the glazing rattles, and if fog is present, modern electric fog signals occasionally sound from equipment mounted below.

The Lantern Room

The lantern room is the glass-enclosed chamber at the very top of the tower that houses the optic. Entering it for the first time is almost always a surprise. The room is small — typically two to four metres in diameter — and dominated by the lens or LED array at its centre. In towers that retain their original Fresnel optics, the lens takes up most of the available space. A first-order Fresnel lens, the largest class used in major seaward lighthouses, can be nearly 3 metres tall and more than 2 metres wide. Its interlocking glass prisms and bull's-eye panels, assembled in a bronze or cast-iron frame, are finely engineered objects, and the craftsmanship of firms such as Chance Brothers of Birmingham or Henry-Lepaute of Paris is evident in every polished surface.

Even when the light is not rotating — which during daylight hours it usually is not — the lens catches and bends available sunlight into vivid spectra across the walls. Stand at the right angle and the lens throws a sharp rainbow across the plaster. Keepers historically kept their lens spotlessly clean, polishing each prism with fine muslin and meticulously removing the carbon deposits left by oil or kerosene combustion. Visitors are invariably asked not to touch the glass, and for good reason: even fine fingerprints scatter light and reduce the optical efficiency of a working lens.

The Exterior Gallery

The gallery — the walkway that rings the outside of the lantern room — is what most climbers are aiming for. Depending on the height of the tower and the weather, it delivers everything from a brisk and exhilarating panorama to a grip-the-railing experience in strong winds. Galleries on exposed offshore towers can be genuinely frightening in a gale, even if the tower is rock-solid beneath you. The gallery at Hatteras, reached through a low door from the lantern room, looks out across the Carolina Outer Banks: a thin strip of sand, the Pamlico Sound to the west and the Atlantic to the east, the horizon further away than seems possible.

At Phare d'Eckmühl in Brittany, completed in 1897 and rising 65 metres above sea level from its hilltop site at Penmarch, the gallery allows a view over the Penmarc'h reef complex, a notorious gravestone of submerged rocks that the lighthouse was built precisely to illuminate. At Hook Head in County Wexford, one of the oldest lighthouses in the world with a tower dating to the twelfth century, the gallery is relatively low but the monastic building's history makes the view feel layered with time.

Practical Considerations

Most lighthouse climbs are self-guided, with a staff member or volunteer at the base who explains the history and safety requirements. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory at virtually every site because the iron stairs offer a grip hazard in sandals, and some narrow passages require ducking under low frames. Children under a minimum height — often around 90 centimetres — may be restricted from climbing, and many sites impose age restrictions for safety reasons on the gallery.

Photography in the lantern room is usually permitted but tripods are rarely allowed given the confined space. The best light for photography from the gallery is early morning or late afternoon, when the angle of the sun picks out the coastline in relief. Wind can affect handheld images significantly at height.

Opening seasons vary enormously. American lighthouses in national and state parks often open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. British and Irish towers managed by heritage bodies such as the National Trust or Irish Landmark Trust may open year-round on a booking basis or seasonally on weekends. Open the map to find lighthouses near your destination and check each listing for visiting details. Arriving at a tower only to find it closed for the season is a particular frustration of lighthouse tourism that a little advance research reliably prevents.

The Descent

Coming down is quicker but harder on the knees, and the tightness of the spiral is more noticeable going downward than upward. The cast-iron treads can be slippery in wet weather — the gallery door often admits rain onto the top few steps — and a firm grip on the central pole or the outer handrail is worth maintaining throughout. The entire climb and descent in a typical tower takes between twenty and forty minutes depending on pace and the number of people sharing the staircase. In peak season at popular towers, the management may admit visitors in timed groups of ten to fifteen to prevent congestion on the stair.

The moment of stepping back outside at the base of the tower, blinking in ordinary daylight after the close spiral, is oddly deflating and pleasing at once. The climb is done; the view is filed in memory; and the tower, which seemed merely decorative from the car park, has revealed itself as a carefully engineered machine built for a specific and demanding job.
