Islands of Refuge

A lighthouse station on a remote rock or headland is, almost by accident, one of the most reliable wildlife sanctuaries in the maritime world. Human occupation kept away casual disturbance; the keeper's presence deterred egg collectors; and the absence of any economic activity beyond maintaining the light meant that the surrounding land — rock platforms, cliff ledges, shallow intertidal pools — was left entirely to nature. Long after the keepers departed and automation took over, the ecological value of these stations has become one of their most important legacies. Many lighthouse sites are now formally protected nature reserves, and the wildlife they shelter would be diminished without the inadvertent conservation that lighthouse keeping provided.

Seabird Colonies on Rock Stations

The offshore rock lighthouse is the most specialised habitat in the lighthouse world, and the most biologically rich. Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth, topped by a lighthouse whose current tower was built in 1902 by David Stevenson, carries one of the largest northern gannet colonies in the world — roughly 150,000 birds on a volcanic plug of about two hectares. The lighthouse keeper's dwelling and the foghorn building are now entirely surrounded by nesting gannets between April and August, and the rock is so densely occupied that visiting scientists must watch their footing on every approach. The lighthouse is still active, showing a flashing white light every 20 seconds with a range of 24 nautical miles.

Skellig Michael off County Kerry in south-west Ireland carries the remains of an Early Christian monastery and a lighthouse built by the Commissioners of Irish Lights in 1826. The lower part of the rock supports a gannet colony established after the keepers left. More remarkably, the puffin population on Skellig — estimated at tens of thousands of individuals — nests in burrows that honeycomb the grassy slopes, and the birds return to the same burrows year after year, undisturbed by the UNESCO World Heritage visitors who arrive by boat during the summer months. The lighthouse itself is automated, its helicopter landing pad one of the few modern intrusions on a site otherwise unchanged for centuries.

Grey Seals and Lighthouse Rocks

Grey seals haul out on the lower rock platforms of offshore lighthouse stations with a regularity that made them familiar features of keeper life. The Eddystone lighthouse on its isolated rock 22 kilometres south of Plymouth is frequented by Atlantic grey seals; so is the Fastnet Rock off County Cork, the Wolf Rock south-west of Land's End, and the Longships lighthouse at the very tip of the Cornish peninsula. Keepers in the nineteenth century wrote routinely of seals resting below the tower, undisturbed by the machinery noise and the lighthouse boat coming and going. The seals' tolerance of industrial-scale noise — compressor-driven fog signals could produce sound pressure levels of 135 decibels at close range — suggests that the acoustic environment of a lighthouse station, however disturbing to human ears, does not deter marine mammals from treating the rocks as a resting site.

Vegetation and Invertebrates on Lighthouse Headlands

On headland stations where there is soil, the absence of grazing and development has allowed nationally rare plant communities to persist. Handa Island in Sutherland, topped by a small lighthouse, supports a cliff-top heath of purple heather and sea campion that has not been grazed since the island was cleared of its farming population in 1847. The Mull of Galloway, the southernmost point of Scotland and home to a Robert Stevenson lighthouse of 1830, has a Site of Special Scientific Interest designation covering the headland's maritime heath and the rare northern brown argus butterfly that breeds in it.

In the United States, several lighthouse sites within the National Wildlife Refuge system preserve coastal habitats of exceptional value. Pelican Island in Florida, the site of a nineteenth-century lighthouse, was the first federal wildlife refuge in the United States, established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 specifically to protect the brown pelican colonies that had been devastated by feather hunters. The lighthouse site gave the refuge its name and its initial protected core. Point Reyes Lighthouse in California — a 1870 lens station still carrying its original third-order Fresnel lens, accessible by climbing 308 steps — sits within the Point Reyes National Seashore, which protects one of the densest concentrations of migratory shorebirds on the Pacific flyway.

Whale-Watching and Cetacean Research

Several lighthouse headlands are significant cetacean observation points. Cape St Mary's in Newfoundland — lighthouse established 1860, 15 metres tall — overlooks waters where humpback, minke and fin whales regularly surface in summer. Ardnamurchan Point lighthouse in Scotland, the westernmost point of the British mainland, built in 1849 by Alan Stevenson in an Egyptian Revival style, stands above waters where minke whales are frequently observed in July and August. The elevated observation platform that the lighthouse tower provides, combined with the unobstructed view of a prominent headland, has made lighthouse galleries useful to cetacean researchers conducting standardised watch effort surveys, and several studies of whale seasonality and distribution have been based on counts made from lighthouse platforms.

The Keeper as Naturalist

The lighthouse keeper's combination of acute observation, plentiful time, and access to remote locations produced a tradition of natural history record-keeping that has ongoing scientific value. The ornithological logs kept at Fair Isle Bird Observatory — co-located with a Northern Lighthouse Board light — from 1948 onward constitute one of the longest continuous records of migratory bird occurrence in Britain, and the observatory's foundation itself grew directly from the interest of a lighthouse keeper who began recording unusual species visiting the island in the 1930s. At the Fastnet Rock, at Bardsey Island, and at many other lighthouse stations, the daily log contains weather observations, sea conditions, and incidental natural history notes whose cumulative value, viewed across 150 years, is considerable.

The lighthouse's ecological legacy is not incidental but structural. Remote, protected, observed for generations, these stations became some of the best-documented natural sites in the maritime world.
