The Stevenson Lighthouse Dynasty
A Family of Builders at the Edge of the Sea
Between 1790 and 1940, one Scottish family shaped the entire navigational landscape of the northern seas. The Stevensons — Robert, Alan, David, Thomas, David Alan, and Charles — served as engineers to the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses across four generations. In that span they designed and oversaw the construction of more than ninety lighthouses on the coasts and islands of Scotland and the Isle of Man. Their towers still flash tonight over the Minches, the Pentland Firth, and the exposed Atlantic approaches of the Outer Hebrides. One member of the family chose literature over engineering and became the most celebrated Scottish writer of the nineteenth century: Robert Louis Stevenson, who grew up listening to his father Thomas describe the sea and the rocks.
The dynasty began with Robert Stevenson, born in Glasgow in 1772. Apprenticed to Thomas Smith — the first engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board and his eventual stepfather — Robert quickly outgrew mentorship and took on the Board's engineering work himself. Over a long career he surveyed every significant headland and reef on the Scottish coast, designed lighthouses from the simple to the audacious, and fought for improvements in lighthouse design, light technology, and the welfare of keepers.
Bell Rock: The Foundation of a Legend
Robert Stevenson's masterwork was the Bell Rock lighthouse, raised on the Inchcape reef twelve miles off Arbroath in the Firth of Forth between 1807 and 1811. The reef, which barely breaks the surface at low water, had claimed dozens of ships over the centuries, including the 74-gun HMS York in 1804 with the loss of nearly five hundred men. The catastrophe pressed the Northern Lighthouse Board and Parliament to fund what everyone understood would be an exceptionally difficult construction.
Robert drew heavily on John Smeaton's Eddystone tower of 1759 — the dovetailed granite drum — but Bell Rock presented additional challenges: the reef is submerged for about twenty hours of every twenty-four, giving working parties only a brief window at low tide. He designed a temporary wooden beacon house on the rock to shelter the workforce during the construction season, a pragmatic solution that almost certainly saved lives. The tower rose 35 metres and was completed in 1811. Its light was first exhibited on 1 February of that year, occulting originally and later converted to a flashing character. Bell Rock remains active today, its white-painted granite tower automated in 1988 and maintained by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
Alan Stevenson and the Giant Lenses
Robert's eldest son Alan succeeded his father as chief engineer to the Board in 1843 and immediately set about equipping Scottish lighthouses with the Fresnel dioptric lens system that the French physicist had perfected in the 1820s. Alan was the scholar of the family: he translated French technical literature, corresponded with Fresnel's colleagues, and introduced first-order and second-order lenses to towers his father had built with the older catoptric reflector apparatus. The improvement in light power was dramatic — a well-fitted dioptric lens could triple or quadruple the visible range of the same light source.
Alan's greatest original work was Skerryvore, built on a submerged reef of gneiss twelve miles south-west of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides between 1838 and 1844. The sea conditions at Skerryvore are among the most violent in Europe: wave heights in winter storms regularly exceed fifteen metres. Alan designed a tower of 48 metres in grey granite ashlar, with a profile that tapered more gracefully than Bell Rock's, the courses of stone interlocking and narrowing toward the lantern. Engineers and writers alike have called it the most beautiful lighthouse ever built. The light has a character of two white flashes every twenty seconds, with a nominal range of 26 nautical miles. Like Bell Rock, it was automated in 1994.
David, Thomas and the Peak of the Dynasty
After Alan's retirement in 1853, his brothers David and Thomas shared the chief engineer's role. Between them they added another forty or more lighthouses to the Scottish coast. Thomas was perhaps the most inventive of the brothers: he developed the azimuthal condensing system, a prismatic arrangement that concentrated the beam from a revolving lens more efficiently, and he designed the rocking mechanism used in several subsequent towers. He also invented the screen and the stepping of the light so that certain sectors showed white to safe water and red to danger — a feature now universal in coastal lighting but then novel.
Thomas's son, also named David, and David's son Charles extended the dynasty into the twentieth century. By the time Charles retired, the family had overseen the construction of lighthouses from Muckle Flugga — the most northerly lighthouse in Britain, on a rock north of Unst in Shetland — to the Rhinns of Islay in the south-west, and from the Pentland Skerries in the east to the Monach Isles facing the Atlantic in the west. The Northern Lighthouse Board's website lists 213 lighthouses on the Scottish coast and Isle of Man today; the majority of the original stone towers were Stevenson buildings.
The Writer Who Stepped Away
Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850, the son of Thomas and the grandson of Robert. He trained as an engineer at Edinburgh University and worked alongside his father on several inspections of Scottish lighthouses, but the sea air and the technical discipline never fully engaged him. He studied law as a second option and abandoned that too, turning to the essays, stories, and novels that would make his reputation. Treasure Island appeared in 1883, Kidnapped in 1886, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde also in 1886, and his South Seas writing of the late 1880s and 1890s carried his experiences of island life to a wide Victorian readership.
He wrote about his lighthouse upbringing with clear-eyed affection. His essay 'Records of a Family of Engineers', assembled in the 1890s and published posthumously, describes his grandfather Robert's career with the pride of a man who understood craft even if he chose a different one. The lighthouses themselves appear in his fiction as symbols of warning, duty and isolation. In Kidnapped, the Earraid tidal island — where the Northern Lighthouse Board had a shore base for the Dubh Artach lighthouse construction, a building supervised by Thomas — provides the setting for David Balfour's most harrowing days of solitude. Robert Louis Stevenson died in Samoa in 1894, aged 44.
The Legacy on the Rocks
Standing on the deck of any vessel in Scottish waters at night, the flashes of Stevenson lighthouses are never far away. Cape Wrath light at the north-western corner of the Scottish mainland, designed by Robert and first lit in 1828, shows a four-flash group every thirty seconds with a range of 22 nautical miles. Ardnamurchan, the most westerly point of the British mainland, carries a tower designed by Alan Stevenson in an Egyptian Revival style completed in 1849, its castellated granite profile 35 metres tall and its flashing character visible for 24 nautical miles. Neist Point on Skye, completed in 1909 to a design by David Alan Stevenson, guards a headland where the Minch narrows.
The Northern Lighthouse Board maintains all of these structures today, monitoring them remotely from its headquarters in Edinburgh. The towers themselves require surprisingly little continuous attention now that they are automated: the lamps are sealed-beam units on rotating mechanisms, the fog signals are electronic, and the apparatus is checked by periodic visits rather than by the round-the-clock attendance of resident keepers. The keepers' cottages that once housed families on these remote stations have been sold, converted to holiday accommodation, or demolished. But the towers remain, the light characters recorded in the Admiralty List of Lights unchanged in most cases since Thomas or Alan first specified them in the nineteenth century.
Visiting the Stevenson Towers
Access to Stevenson lighthouses varies considerably. Several are staffed visitor centres: the Northern Lighthouse Board operates Kinnaird Head in Fraserburgh as the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, which holds a collection of lenses and equipment and offers guided tours of the original 1787 tower, one of the first lighthouses on the Scottish coast. Ardnamurchan lighthouse is open to visitors in summer, with a small visitor centre and guided tours to the lantern room. Neist Point is accessible by a walking path from the road at Glendale on Skye and is one of the most photographed lighthouse settings in Britain, though the tower interior is closed.
Muckle Flugga on Unst, designed by Thomas Stevenson and completed in 1854, can be viewed only from the shore of Hermaness National Nature Reserve, where the path through the gannet and bonxie colonies to the headland gives a view of the white tower perched on its bare rock above the Atlantic breakers. Bell Rock can be seen from the Arbroath coast or from boat trips. Skerryvore is visible from the coast of Tiree on clear days and is the subject of one of the finest maritime photographs in the Northern Lighthouse Board's archive: the tower barely emerging from the spray of a winter storm.

An Engineering Patrimony
No other family has left a comparable physical mark on the navigational infrastructure of any country. The Stevensons brought rigour, scholarship, and a willingness to work in extreme conditions to a series of engineering problems that no one before them had solved at this scale. Their towers were not merely functional structures but carefully considered compositions in stone, proportioned to resist wave forces that nineteenth-century engineers could measure only approximately and had to judge largely by experience.
The Fresnel lenses Alan and Thomas introduced — some of them still turning in their original mercury baths in heritage lighthouses — belong to the history of optics as much as to the history of navigation. The azimuthal condensing system Thomas patented influenced lighthouse design across Europe. And the family's habit of writing — technical papers, annual reports, memoirs, and in Robert Louis's case a body of literature still read around the world — means that the Stevenson era is better documented than almost any other chapter of lighthouse history. Their work was built to last, and it has.
