The Oldest Lighthouses in the World
The Question of Continuity
Defining the world's oldest lighthouse requires agreeing on what 'oldest' means. The Pharos of Alexandria, completed around 280 BCE, was undoubtedly the most impressive lighthouse structure of the ancient world, but it no longer exists. The Tower of Hercules at A Coruña in Spain contains Roman masonry from the first or second century CE and still operates as an active lighthouse — which makes it, by any reasonable definition, the world's oldest working light. Cordouan, off the Gironde estuary in France, has been marked by a lighthouse since the ninth century and by the current tower since 1611, making it among the oldest substantially intact lighthouse buildings. The question of which is 'oldest' depends on whether you prioritise archaeological depth, structural continuity, or unbroken operation.
Each answer leads to a different building, a different coast, and a different story about why ancient maritime nations decided that some hazards were important enough to mark permanently.
The Tower of Hercules, A Coruña
The Torre de Hércules stands on a headland north of A Coruña in Galicia, marking the approach to the port from the Atlantic. The Roman tower was built by the architect Gaius Sevius Lupus, as an inscription at the base records, probably during the reign of Trajan (98–117 CE), though some scholars place the construction earlier, in the first century. The original Roman structure was about 36 metres tall, built in three diminishing stages in the same fashion as the Pharos. By the medieval period it had fallen into disrepair, losing its upper sections and much of its cladding.
The restoration of 1788–1791 by the Spanish engineer Eustaquio Giannini encased the surviving Roman core in a new outer shell, increased the total height to 68 metres, and fitted the tower with a lantern room. The Roman masonry is still visible in the lower stages through windows cut in the modern exterior. UNESCO designated the tower a World Heritage Site in 2009, recognising both its antiquity and its unbroken function as a navigational mark. The current light — an occulting white and red character, visible for 23 nautical miles — was automated in the twentieth century. The tower is open to visitors, and the climb to the lantern gallery gives a clear view of the shipping lanes the tower has marked for nearly two millennia.
Cordouan: The King of Lighthouses
The Cordouan lighthouse, on a sandbank at the mouth of the Gironde estuary between Bordeaux and the sea, is a building of extraordinary architectural ambition for its type. A hermit maintained a beacon here in the early medieval period; the Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock, had a tower and a chapel built on the bank in the fourteenth century. The current tower was designed by Louis de Foix, a French Renaissance architect, and construction began in 1584 under Henry III — though the building was not completed until 1611 under Henry IV, after de Foix's death.
The result is unlike any other lighthouse in the world. The lowest level is an elaborate Renaissance palace, with lodgings, a vestibule and decorative stonework appropriate to a royal commission. Above it is a domed chapel. Above the chapel, the lighthouse tower proper begins, and above that the original lantern room, raised and modified several times in subsequent centuries. The total height is 68 metres. In 1782, the astronomer and engineer Joseph-Mathieu Teulère undertook a major reconstruction of the upper tower, raising its height and installing a new optical apparatus. It was at Cordouan that Augustin Fresnel's first dioptric lens was tested in 1823, making the lighthouse the site of the most important advance in lighthouse optics in history.
Cordouan was classified as a monument historique in 1862 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. It is the last lighthouse in France to be classified as a monument under the law's original provisions — all subsequent designations used different procedures — and it remains an active aid to navigation, its white and red sector light visible for 22 nautical miles. Visits are possible by boat from Royan or Le Verdon-sur-Mer, depending on tide; the crossing to the sandbank is tide-dependent and visitors should book through licensed operators.
Hook Head, Ireland
Hook Head Lighthouse, at the tip of the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, is generally described as one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. Monks at a monastery on the peninsula maintained a coal fire as a navigation light from the twelfth century, possibly earlier. The substantial stone tower that stands today was built around 1172 CE by William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, who was developing the port of New Ross up the Barrow estuary and needed the headland marked. The tower, roughly cylindrical and about 20 metres tall, is one of the best-preserved examples of Norman military and ecclesiastical architecture in Ireland, and its walls are up to 4 metres thick.
The light was continuously maintained by a succession of religious and secular authorities from its construction until automation in 1996. The current character is a white flash every three seconds, visible for 23 nautical miles. The Commissioners of Irish Lights, who operate it, have converted the station buildings into a visitor centre and the tower is open to climbers throughout the year. The combination of the medieval structure, the active light, and the strong interpretive programme makes Hook Head among the most rewarding lighthouse visits in northern Europe.
Château d'If and the Ancient Mediterranean Lights
Several lights on the Mediterranean coast have histories of comparable length to Hook Head, though the surviving structures are less well preserved. The lighthouse on the island of Pianosa off the Tuscan coast was originally a Roman signal station. The Tour de Constance at Aigues-Mortes in the Camargue served as both a fortification and a lighthouse from its construction in 1248. The lighthouse at Genoa — La Lanterna — was first built in 1128, making it one of the oldest in Europe, though the current structure dates from a rebuilding in 1543 after the original was destroyed in a military siege. La Lanterna stands 77 metres tall and exhibits a two-flash white character every twenty seconds, visible for 33 nautical miles, from the heights above the port entrance.
The preservation of these ancient structures is generally the work of civic pride as much as lighthouse management. La Lanterna was a symbol of Genoa centuries before it became a protected monument; Hook Head is part of the Irish coastguard heritage; Cordouan is a French national monument. The structures survive partly because they were always considered important enough to maintain and partly because their function — guiding ships into harbour — gave them an operational argument for preservation that purely decorative buildings lack.
The Oldest in America: Boston Light
The oldest lighthouse in North America is Boston Light, on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbour, first lit on 14 September 1716. The original tower was destroyed during the American Revolutionary War by retreating British troops in 1776; the current tower, built in 1783, is 27 metres tall and exhibits an isophase white light visible for 27 nautical miles. It was the last lighthouse in the United States to be de-automated — the US Coast Guard maintained a resident keeper at Boston Light until 1998, by which time all other American lighthouses had been automated, partly as a deliberate act of historical continuity. A civilian caretaker continues to serve at the station today.
Time and the Active Light
What makes these structures extraordinary is not simply their age but the continuity of their purpose. The Tower of Hercules has been guiding ships into A Coruña for almost 1,900 years. Hook Head has marked the entrance to Waterford Harbour for over 850. The technology has changed beyond recognition — from coal fires to oil lamps to Fresnel optics to LED arrays — but the function remains identical to what it was on the day each tower was first lit.
