1. Eddystone Lighthouse, Devon
The Eddystone reef, 14 miles south of Plymouth in the western approaches to the English Channel, was one of the most dangerous obstructions on the busiest commercial sea lane in the world. Four towers have stood on this rock, each representing the leading engineering thinking of its era. The first, a polygonal timber and iron structure by Henry Winstanley, was completed in 1698 and destroyed — with its builder inside — by the Great Storm of 1703. John Rudyerd built a timber replacement, which burned in 1755. John Smeaton's 1759 granite tower, interlocking each course of stone, established the principles of interlocking masonry that all subsequent rock tower builders followed; it stood until the reef beneath it began to undermine the rock and the structure was moved to Plymouth Hoe, where it stands today.
